About Our Therapist, Dr Stef Garner, at Unicorn Care
Stef brings specialist post-qualification training to her work with couples. She has undertaken dedicated study in couples-focused therapeutic approaches and has specific training in working with LGBTQI+ and CNM couples through Pink Therapy, one of the UK's leading providers of training for therapists working with gender, sexuality and relationship diversity. Her practice is warm, non-judgmental and firmly grounded in respect for the full diversity of her clients' relationships and identities.
What Is Couples Counselling (and When Can It Help?)
Couples counselling - sometimes called relationship counselling or couples therapy - is a form of talking therapy in which a trained therapist works with two (or sometimes more) people in a relationship. Sessions provide a structured, confidential space in which both partners can speak honestly, be truly heard, and work together towards meaningful change.
Unlike individual therapy, couples counselling focuses on the relationship itself: the patterns, dynamics and communication styles that have developed between partners over time.
Couples seek counselling at a wide range of points in a relationship. It is not only for partnerships in crisis. Many couples choose to work with a therapist during periods of growth or transition, or simply when they want to deepen their connection and understanding of one another.
Couples counselling can help with:
Communication difficulties and recurring arguments
Intimacy concerns, including physical and emotional closeness
Navigating major life transitions - relocation, bereavement, illness or becoming parents
Processing infidelity or broken trust
Exploring sexual compatibility and sexual health
Supporting identity exploration, including gender identity and sexual orientation
Managing the unique pressures and dynamics of non-traditional relationship structures

CNM, Polyamorous and ENM Couples
Consensually non-monogamous relationships have their own unique dynamics, and it matters enormously to work with a therapist who genuinely understands them. Whether you are opening up your relationship, navigating communication within a polyamorous arrangement, or working through feelings of jealousy or polysaturation, we are here for you.
Couples Exploring Kink, BDSM and Alternative Intimacy

At Unicorn Care, you will find a sex-positive, kink-affirming space where all consensual relationship dynamics are welcomed and respected. Learn more about Kink Aware Therapy at Unicorn Care.

Expat Couples in Bangkok
Relocating to Bangkok brings its own relationship pressures: navigating a new culture, managing different support networks and working through the stress of transition. We understand the expat experience and offer both in-person sessions in Bangkok and online couples counselling for those anywhere in South East Asia.
Common Reasons Couples Seek Counselling in Bangkok (Including Expats)
Bangkok is a vibrant, fast-moving city with a large and diverse international community. For both local couples and expats, relationship challenges can be amplified by the particular pressures of city life, cultural adjustment, and at times, being far from home.
Some of the most common reasons couples in Bangkok reach out for support include:
Feeling disconnected or like you are growing apart
Recurring conflict that never quite finds resolution
Intimacy difficulties, including changes in sexual desire or physical closeness
Adjusting to expat life, including the stress of relocation or navigating cultural differences
Processing an affair, betrayal or breach of trust
Supporting one or both partners through personal challenges - mental health difficulties, loss or identity questions
Navigating the dynamics of open, polyamorous or non-monogamous relationships
Exploring sexual identity or relationship structure together as a couple
Whether you have been together for six months or six years, couples counselling in Bangkok can offer a meaningful space to reconnect, reflect and move forward together.

What Happens in a Couples Counselling Session at Unicorn Care
Beginning couples counselling can feel like a significant step. Knowing what to expect can make it easier.
At Unicorn Care, your first session is an opportunity to meet your therapist, share what has brought you to counselling, and begin to explore what you are hoping to work towards. There is no pressure to have all the answers at the outset - the work unfolds at a pace that feels right for both of you.
Couples sessions typically take place weekly or fortnightly and last around an hour and a half. This is longer than a typical individual session and ensures that everyone has the chance to express themselves and the space to be truly heard. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you throughout, drawing on her specialist training and knowledge to help you better understand your relationship dynamics, improve communication and build the connection you are looking for.
Everything discussed in sessions is kept strictly confidential. Unicorn Care provides a genuinely inclusive and affirming environment, meaning your relationship - whatever form it takes - will be met with respect, understanding and care.
Sessions are available in person in Bangkok or online for couples, regardless of their location.
How to Know If Couples Counselling Is Right for You
There is no single 'right' moment to begin couples counselling. Many couples find it helpful at times of difficulty, but just as many come to therapy as a proactive step - wanting to deepen communication, work through a recurring pattern, or prepare for a significant life transition together.
You might consider couples counselling if:
You feel like you and your partner are not truly hearing each other
The same arguments keep recurring without resolution and the relationship seems ‘stuck’
Intimacy - physical or emotional - has become difficult or strained
You are navigating a significant change together, such as relocation, loss or a shift in relationship structure
One or both of you is exploring questions of identity, orientation or relationship dynamics
You want to strengthen your relationship before challenges arise
It is also worth noting that couples counselling is not only for relationships in difficulty. Many couples work with a therapist simply because they value their relationship and want to invest in it.
If you are unsure whether couples counselling is the right step, we warmly invite you to get in touch. We are always happy to have an initial conversation.
